Paine Black House: A Welcome Transformation

If you have been lamenting the decline of the Paine Black House over the past decade, it’s time to celebrate.  After procuring funding, the Town has moved quickly on this project.  Mold and moisture issues have been addressed.  With the help of the Sheriff’s Community Service Crew the building has been re-shingled.  A new roof is planned and windows will be repaired.  Foundation plants were removed to facilitate the site work but an established row of hydrangeas was saved as was attractive stonework abutting the driveway.  An overgrown wooded area around the house promises to reveal an interesting and beautiful variety of trees and shrubs.

A working village committee has been meeting with town personnel for updates on progress and continued discussion about uses for the structure. Town Councilor

Phil Wallace has facilitated committee meetings and maintained communication with town departments.  There is much more to be done before the Paine Black House is actively available for community use, but when the lawn is blooming again with purple and white crocuses, the Paine Black House will no doubt be looking better than ever.

Tree Work April 2014

We appreciate The Davey Tree Expert Company’s generous contribution of tree work at the Farm. In spite of a cold wind and drenching rain, District Manager Natascha Batchelor and her crew Kenny O’Connell, Josh Sargent, Martin Potter and Bernie Pinckney spent Saturday April 26th, downing trees, grinding stumps and chipping brush. The crew’s work was part of the Massachusetts Arborists Association’s Arbor Day of Service.

Thanks again to this energetic and skilled crew!

Massachusetts Arborists Day Of Service

SATURDAY APRIL 26

The bumper sticker “If you’re breathing, thank a tree” says it all!

On Arbor Day, April 25, the world officially recognizes the importance of trees for their miracle of photosynthesis as well as for the beauty and shelter they provide.

During Arbor Day weekend, arborists throughout Massachusetts will be participating in MAA Day of Service events.

Natascha Batchelor of The Davey Tree Expert Co. in Falmouth is organizing a Day of Service for Saturday April 26 at Meetinghouse Farm. Participating arborists will be pruning and removing trees to improve the safety and health of trees around the Farm. The Farm’s trees are a unique community resource and we appreciate the participation of local arborists in this statewide event.

MORE ABOUT TREES!

STANLEY SMITH HORTICULTURAL TRUST

A survey of the Farm’s trees is underway as part of the $10,000 grant received from the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust. This grant also provides funds to add new ornamentals, create a brochure showcasing the Farm’s trees and offer more tree-related programs.

TREE BLITZ

Five days of field trips for Barnstable’s 4th graders, are planned for June. TREE BLITZ is an annual educational event in collaboration with AmeriCorps Cape Cod. Students explore tree-related topics at a series of teaching stations and collect and analyze data on the Farm’s most unique trees.
